But three years down the line DTH is one of the fastest growing business ventures in India. The old concept of cable television is just retreating behind as the DTH providers have captured the larger share of its market. Many people finds DTH services more useful as it offers superior picture quality and sound and more importantly great customer relations. The cable also gets cut off during the power failure in its operating place but there is hardly any cut off in DTH services. Studies prove that DTH users in India will touch the 5 million mark by the end of 2010. Moreover they provide add-ons like interactive TV, easy program guide, in demand movies and even pizza ordering. The cost also has decrease since the competition has become cut throat in this category.
There are at least seven to eight competitors in this segment trying to catch the eye of the customer. Each day someone or other company is bringing up new and innovative ideas. Tata Sky is the current market leader in this segment followed closely by Airtel, Sun, and Dish TV. Tata Sky has brought many new technologies in this field. They were the first one to bring a storage set top box where we can pause, record and playback our favorite television programs. Each set top box comes with a internal hard disk storage space used to store recorded television programs. Airtel in turn has gone a step further and introduced mobile recording facility. Almost all the providers are now started to give some channels in High Definition (H.D) which offers even better sound quality. The reduction of prices in LCD and LED televisions have also accounted for increase in sales of these set to boxes. According to a survey conducted among working professionals in Mumbai and Bengaluru most people preferred DTH services to local cable services as they offer greater value for money.
